I’ve been playing around with Twitter and reading more about it over the last month or so. I am beginning to sense its potential to do a number of different things above and beyond telling people that you’re “eating pumpkin pie while watching Lawrence of Arabia” or spamming them with affiliate links. Between those two Twitter poles of the mundane and the spammy is a lot of space for good things.
So, when I found out about a list of over 200 Twitter tools, I immediately took a look.
Complete Twitter overshare. Overload.
Even if I don’t bother looking at the Linux stuff and the mobile tools (they don’t fit with the way I operate), it’s still an imposing collection of tools, widgets and mash-ups.
Eventually, I will look at the things that seem at least mildly relevant to my interests relative to Twitter, I suppose. Eventually. Then, I’ll take a closer look at tools that seem to fit my particular bill.
This collection of Twittery goodness reminded me of one of the most important things I’ve learned about doing business online and the problem of potential overload.
It’s a good reminder of just how far you can snake down any rabbit hole. When it comes to online endeavors, the trick often comes down to having a feel for what will really advance your interests and what will merely suck your time away. You can dig deep, but it’s far too easy to get lost in the tunnels if you aren’t keeping your focus on the things that matter most.

Admittedly, I don’t know much about twitter, but there is one business that uses it in an interesting way. In New York, there is a dumpling restaurant called Rickshaw Dumplings and they’ve recently started a roving dumpling truck, and they use twitter to tell people where they are going to be each day. I am addicted to their dumplings, but the restaurant is not near my neighborhood, so I’ve used it a few times to find out whether they are close to me. It’s pretty clever.

Megan-
That’s a pretty cool use. If the ice cream truck did that around here in the summertime, we’d be able to have our money ready and wouldn’t end up chasing it wildly, trying to flag it down as it disappears down the street.
Oh, and now I’m hungry for some dumplings!
I have been using twitter regularly for about a month now to tweet my blog post. The response has been great. it beats preparing an email message and uploading it to your autoresponder any day.
